EPIRBs communicate with satellites and are used at the start of a rescue when you first alert emergency services to your location. SARTs communicate with other vessels and are used when rescuers are on scene and homing in on your exact position.
EPIRB. An Emergency Position Indicating RadioBeacon (EPIRB) is a device used in the maritime sector to alert rescue authorites and indicate the location and the identity of a vessel in distress. When activated, the EPIRB starts to emit a signal that is detectable by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network anywhere in the world.

Topic 5. EPIRB Testing and Maintenance. The following test and check procedure must be carried out on a monthly basis taking especial care that the EPIRB is disarmed (switched to OFF or SAFE) before removing from its HRU : Visually inspect the EPIRB and its mountings for cracks. Regular cleaning of the EPIRB and its mounting is recommended.
